Winners 2009

All the winners.

From left to right: Mike Best, Dan Jamieson, Keith Stott, Mrs Milliken, Mr President, Tom Hassan, Peter Shaw, Allan Donaldson, Allistair Leckie, Clive Turner, Jim Dunlop, Duncan McDonald.

Despite the solemnity of the occasion you'll notice that Duncan is wearing his trophy like a sporran and Jim has just been caught swigging lager out of his. Mr President had been balancing Tom Hassans trophy on his nose and Ace Photographer Willie Patterson just managed to catch the action as he flipped it onto his shoulder.

Second Bi-Monthly Digital Image Competition

This is just a quick reminder that it is handing in day for the Second Bi-Monthly Digital Image Competition on Friday 18th December. You should present a maximum of FIVE images. Anyone who fails to get their images to Jean Blair’s assistant (Mike Best) by Friday evening will be horsewhipped through the streets of Paisley and then tarred and feathered – well maybe not feathered, I’ll probably use some synthetic material instead – health and safety and all that…

Sizing and Naming Files for Competition

For all competitions your images should be named as follows:

If your competition number is 247 and your first image is called “Big Scary Dog”, the filename should begin with 01 (zero one) followed by an underscore and then your competition number.  Subsequent image names should start with 02_247, 03_247 etc.

Immediately after this should be the name of your image (in title case) and finally the file extension - either Tif or Jpg – the file extension is normally added by your Photo Editing package.

Examples:

01_247Big Scary Dog.jpg
02_247Uncle Fred.tif
03_247My Finger In Front Of The Lens.jpg

Please do not use any other digits or formatting such as hyphens or apostrophes as these may be stripped out when the files are renamed for the judge.

If you need further information, please refer to the Digital Image Guidance notes below or contact Mike Best.

If you would rather cut your own leg off with a plastic party knife than buy Photoshop or one of its derivatives there is a very easy to use and free basic photo editing package called FastStone Image Viewer which can be downloaded from here: www.faststone.org/FSViewerDownload.htm

It is more than adequate for sizing and naming your images for competition and it also allows you to easily preview your changes such as sharpening before you commit to them.

If you need more control but are still unwilling to increase your mortgage for a copy of CS4 you should give the most excellent GIMP a try. It is also free and is a worthy rival to Photoshop.

You can download it here: www.gimp.org

If you do a search on Google for GIMP and end up with pictures of people dressed up in rubber you are way off track - unless you like that sort of thing of course. ;)

Digital Image Guidance

There are only five things you need to know (for now anyway):

Q. How many images should I submit?
A. Five maximum.

Q. What size should my images be?
A. An image orientated as a Portrait should be 1050 pixels high – it will never exceed the 1400 pixel limit for width - so you don’t have to worry about that.

An image orientated as a Landscape should be no more than 1400 pixels wide and no more than 1050 pixels high – this is something you should check BEFORE you actually resize your image. A square image should be 1050 pixels by 1050 pixels maximum.

In all cases, you should try and get your image as close as possible to the 1400 by 1050 limit, as this will display your images at their best. Don't forget to constrain the proportions of your image when it is being resized, otherwise it will end up looking stretched. Your images should be resized AFTER you have done all the fiddly bits such as colour corrections, contrast tweaks etc. The very last thing you may want to do is a spot of sharpening, but don’t go crazy with this as the images are being sent to a screen rather than a printer and don’t need to be sharpened quite so much. As a rule of thumb, if you can see obvious white halos on your image you have gone too far and should undo your sharpening and then redo it but tone it down a bit.

Q. What Colour Space should my image files be saved in?
A. sRGB. What this is called in the application you are using may vary - in Photoshop it is known as “sRGB IE61966-2.1” - in the application you are using it may just be called sRGB.

Q. What format should my image files be saved in?
A. Either TIF or highest quality JPEG.

Q. What should I name my Image Files?

A. Your image filenames should start with a number from 01 to 05, followed by an underscore (hold down the Shift Key and press the minus sign (-) to the right of the zero key) and then your competition number and the full name of your image (in title case). For example, if your competition number is 123 and your first image is a Jpeg called “misty Loch Ard”, it would be named “01_123Misty Loch Ard.jpg”. Consequent images would start with 02_123, 03_123, 04_123 05_123 etc.

You should NOT use any other numbers in your Image Name as they will be stripped out by the software that prepares the images to burned to CD for the Judge.

I have tried to make this guide as generic as possible (not everyone uses Photoshop or one of its derivatives) so you may have to delve into the help files of the application you are using in order to find out how to resize and save images as sRGB.
