Santa Visits PPS

Santa visited Paisley Photographic recently but he got mugged before managing to get to the club. The assailants - three elves from the seedy end of town - stole his beard and beautiful leather belt with solid gold buckle. In an act of unusual charity and sensitivity the elves gave Santa a piece of rope keep his coat closed and hold up his trousers. The ladies of the club expressed their disappointment as they thought he was a stripper hired for the night, but at least they did not get overheated at the sight of Santa’s’ large woollen underpants.

Our hero, Dr Bob gave chase but soon lost the miscreants when he was forced to stop at the tea table for some Christmas cake and a cup of tea - which meant that he didn’t get to see Santa, never mind Dr Bob, maybe next year…

Santa gave out gifts to the few members who had been good this year - the naughty members got nothing, you know who you are...

Key Exchange

This Friday (19th November) is Key Exchange night - so don't forget to bring your key along. If you don't exchange your key you will be unable to get into the club and then you'll be standing outside, in the rain, looking like a fool. If you're really unlucky, small, grubby urchins will probably pass by and start to mock you, pointing and laughing at your self-inflicted situation. If this does happen you should go home immediately as there is an 85% likelyhood that a meteor will land in the precise spot you will be standing on, killing you instantly and fueling the mirth of the heartless infants.

So don't forget your key, the consequences are obviously quite dire.

Affiliation with Warehouse Express

Paisley Photographic Society has entered into an affiliation program with Warehouse Express. This means that the club can earn a small commission from items bought by people who access the Warehouse Express website by clicking on the link on our site. It is important to note that this does NOT add any additional cost for the person clicking through our site; Warehouse Express bears the cost of the commission that PPS earns.

I have used Warehouse Express on many occasions and have been delighted with the service and quality of goods provided by the company and this affiliation is a huge boon for our club so please use the link on our website rather than going directly to the Warehouse Express site.

You can access the Warehouse Express site by clicking on this image:Warehouse Express

The new season got of to a good start on Friday with The Dingwall Exhibition. There were some excellent images on display and the same lady as last time was doing the commentary so you got plenty of time to get a good look at them.

Sandy Robson

There will be a Commemorative Service for Sandy Robson in Paisley Abbey on Thursday, 19th August at 10.15am before proceeding to Woodside Crematorium for 11am Service. Sandys family would like to invite you to the Glynhill Hotel in Renfrew. I feel sure that many of you would wish to attend one or other or even both services.

Sandy Robson

I have just learned of the death in the RAH, of Alexander [SANDY] Robson through the Church Officer in Paisley Abbey where Sandy was a Member. I know that I was not alone in holding Sandy in the highest possible regard, and his quiet unassuming and unfailing service to PPS not just as Print Secretary, but as Quiz Master, Open Day Steward and Raffle Prize Donor was a model of selfless and exemplary service to the Club. Paisley Photographic Society will be the poorer for his passing and I am certain that our most sincere sympathy and support goes to his daughters, Amanda, Alexandria and Crystal and their families at this time. A Very Private Man of Immense Integrity and Constancy who bore his protracted illness without rancour or complaint and I for one am the richer for having known him. We shall circulate Funeral details as soon as we know them via the NEWS link on the website  http://www.paisley-photographic-society.co.uk/news.html and by e-mail / word of mouth since I feel sure that very many of us would wish to attend if possible.

Sincerely,
Bob Brown

Sandy was one of the kindest, funniest, most likeable people I have ever met and he was one of my best friends. I will never get over his passing, but the intense pain of his loss is a small price to pay for having had the privilege and joy of knowing him and having him as a part of my life.

Friday 4th June Studio Night

This Friday Duncan has organised a studio night for club members, so bring along your camera if you want to participate.

Don’t forget to wash behind your ears, we don’t want the models thinking we’re a bunch of mingers. And stand up straight. Hands out of your pockets. That's better.

Balderstone Trophy

Just a wee reminder that the set subject for the Balderstone Trophy (Section 13 of the Annual Print Competition) this year is "Industry". A difficult subject to capture in this land of Financial Services, but you can be sure that a picture of a bank manager getting lynched will probably score quite highly.

Allistair Leckie

I have just found out from a reliable source that Allistair Leckie has handed over the rights to his winning print - "Paisley Abbey in The Snow" - to the Abbey to help with their organ restoration fund. It would appear that visitors to the Abbey have impeccable taste as the postcard with "Paisley Abbey in The Snow" on it has become a best seller.

Well done Allistair, it looks like your image will continue to be a winner well into the future. Of course now that you don’t own it anymore you can’t put it back into competition – so you can consider your good deed suitably punished. ;-)

Photography - Know Your Rights

Dr Bob has emailed me an article in the Independent Newspaper about the continuing harassment of photographers by police and security staff. It would appear that many officials engaged in law enforcement are pitifully deficient in their knowledge of the law regarding photography in public places. It is hugely important that you know what your legal rights are in order to stop these unwarranted and potentially unlawful actions by the police and security staff. Please use these links HERE and HERE for more information. A Pdf with most of the information you need can be downloaded from HERE.

Paisley Photographic Society President Ian Milliken

Ian MillikenIan MillikenIan Milliken

It is with great sadness that I have to report the death of our President, Ian Milliken. Ian passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday 17th October. All our thoughts go out to his wife Eileen and his family. His passing is a great loss to Paisley Photographic Society and he will be missed by everyone at the club.

The funeral will be held at 11.00am on Saturday 24th October at Woodside Crematorium and afterwards at The Ex Serviceman’s’ Club, Paisley Road, Barrhead.

I will always remember Ian smiling because he did an awful lot of it.

Scary Pictures for Halloween

All club members are asked to produce a scary picture for Halloween. The image should be printed at A4 size (write your name on the back) and should be handed in on Friday 23rd October. The best image will be picked by our speaker on Friday 30th October and the winner will be awarded a fabulous, jewel encrusted prize - maybe.

If we can’t get hold of a fabulous, jewel encrusted prize, we will try and get hold of something equally magnificent. It will probably not be jewel encrusted of course, but it will definitely be magnificent, sort of.

Doors Open Day

Doors Open Day was another fantastic day at Paisley Photographic Society with a huge number of visitors turning up to inspect our facilities and take a look at our photographs. This year we had an “Identify the Macro Images” competition for the children with a rather nice digital camera as the prize. It was heart warming to see how enthusiastic the young people in Renfrewshire are about photography and deciding on the competition winner was an extremely difficult task.

Mr President is still MIA and all our members hope he will be back with us soon.

Mairi - our Vice President - wishes to express her gratitude to all PPS members who gave up their time to prepare the premises before the event and spent Saturday showing our guests around. She would also like to thank all the people who came to visit us.
