Assignment 1 – The Alphabet Assignment.
You are required to shoot a range of subjects that begin with each letter of the alphabet. Your subject can be a person, place, an object, etc. For example, an aunt, a friend, etc whose first name begins with an A, a
place, e.g., Arran, Ayr, Airdrie. An object, such as, an Axe, an Acorn, an Apron, etc.
Assignment 2 – STAND STILL LADDIE!!
You are required to choose a suitable location and stay there for 1 hour. You will then shoot what you see
from this location and anything that passes your location, people, bikes, vehicles, etc.
Time Limit – 1hour.
25% of your images are to be Mono.
Assignment 3 – A Seaside Rendezvous.
There is nothing like a day at the seaside, walks along the front, ice cream and candy floss, looking for crabs in the rock pools, going for a paddle in the sea, watching the sun set as you munch into a bag of fish and chips. For this assignment you are going to the seaside to shoot your images, you will try to capture the sense of fun and atmosphere generated by a day at the seaside. For those of you lucky enough to be leaving these shores during the summer you can bring back some exotic shots for this assignment.
Assignment 4 – It’s a small small world.
This assignment is all about getting really close to your subject, yes it time to talk Macro. Sometimes when people think about macro photography they think of these scary close ups of insects and stuff. If that’s how you want to tackle this assignment that’s fine but if like me, you enjoy life’s creature comforts then you can tackle this assignment within the comfort of your own house. Your presentation can be wholly outdoor nature shots or “tabletop” work or a combination of both.
Assignment 5 – Historic Places.
This should be self-explanatory but here are some examples of what I mean, Glasgow Necropolis, Antonine Wall, Finnieston Crane, The Glenlee (The tall ship at the Transport Museum). For you Paisley Buddies the town is dotted with historic sites, for example, there is a plaque in the middle of a road which marks the spot where the last witch in Paisley was executed. Images should come from a range of historic sites.
25% of your images are to be Mono.
Assignment 6 – At the Setting of the Sun.
We have all heard the judges talk about images that are taken as the sun is setting and there is that point where there is still detail and colour in the sky, it is referred to as the “blue hour”. The problem with the blue hour is that it depends on the time of the year and your geographical location plus it doesn’t last for an hour. So, what happens as the sun sets?
Well, you get different kinds of light. I am writing this on the 14th of March and tonight at 18.18 until 18.55 we will have what is called Civil Twilight, from 18.55 until 19.38 we have Nautical Twilight, from 19.38 until 20.23 we have Astronomical Twilight and from 20.23 until 04.30, we have Night. From 04.30 we then go through the cycle again until we reach Daytime at 06.35. This assignment is about capturing the night sky, again I am looking for images from different locations. Your back garden, up a mountain, in the city, beside the sea, etc.
Assignment 7 – Ghostbusters
This assignment is all about getting creative and messing about with your Shutter Speed. I am looking for
those images where part of the image is sharp but passing through the image is the “ghostly” blur of moving objects. Once again different locations are a must.
Assignment 8 – Up Close & Personal
You are required to produce a range of street portraits, for each image you produce you must have asked
permission from the person you are photographing. You are NOT allowed to photograph family, friends,
work colleagues. This should give you an opportunity to hand out the club’s business cards we had printed.
All your images must be Mono.
